WINTER STORM WATCH2:58 AM CDT Thursday 25 April 2024

A late season winter storm is poised to impact much of the Kivalliq. The storm will begin to affect the region tonight, but the strongest impacts will be Friday into the weekend. A low pressure system currently over northern Alberta will move eastward towards the area today. Snow, strong northeast winds and blowing snow will spread across the region tonight through Friday morning, with blizzard or near-blizzard conditions expected in a few communities by Friday afternoon. General snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm appear likely by storm's end. This watch will be expanded and warnings issued as the system approaches. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Avoid travel if possible. Protect yourself from wind, cold and disorientation by staying sheltered, indoors or with your vehicle. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to NUstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #NUStorm.
