Position Summary:
The Cargo Manager will oversee the daily operations of the Cargo Department. This position will provide guidance and direction to employees and will endeavor to build strong, professional relationships with their teams and customers.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Operations:
- Responsible for training program development, implementation and records control and maintenance
SMS lead for the Cargo department - Logistics management – plans, implements, and control the effective storage and delivery of goods to meet contractual agreements
- Manage Amelia Cargo usage, procedures and full implementation
- Manage VMO OCS freighter utilization, procedures and implementation
- Responsible to provide strategic planning for the day to day cargo operations
- Assist with an inventory tracking system
- Liaison with cargo managers to manage freighter utilization and daily inventory
- Coach cargo management team on employee/labor relations, customer request, and employee inquiries
- Ensure operation meets contractual deadlines
- Establishes and maintains professional relationships with customers, and employees, promoting a good working environment with high morale and employee satisfaction
- Ensure compliance with regulatory authorities as well as internal policies and procedures
- Other duties as assigned
Financial:
- Monitor department manpower to ensure within budget and seek approval for replacement/increase
- Ensure payroll budget targets are achieved
Safety:
- Demonstrate knowledge of employee responsibilities regarding safety and actively participate in the Company’s Safety Management system
- SMS department head responsible to approve SMS caps
- Once assigned a report through the SMS Database: must ensure all steps are followed as outlined in the SMS Procedures Manual in respect to the review, investigation, hazard analysis, root cause analysis, corrective action plan and monitoring of each individual report
- Actively support the safety management system by following SMS processes and encouraging a safety reporting culture in your department
- Promote occupational health and safety within your department and participate in the development and monitoring of safety training
- Proactively communicate hazards and SMS initiatives with your department
Managers, Supervisors and Leads – have been delegated the authority and are responsible to the Department Head to actively identify hazards and deficiencies and report through the SMS (Safety Management System) Program reporting system. Communicate with all personnel within their respective department and other departments as required to maintain effective day to day activities. Ensure regulatory and company standards are maintained. Assist in the development and maintenance of company processes and procedures. (Quality Assurance activities)
Leadership:
- Responsible to build and develop the Cargo team by providing direction, support, training and motivation to carry out assigned cargo strategies
- Change management leader – execute change while supporting employees through communication, listening and auctioning
- Lead and inspire employees, provide mentorship and oversee the professional development of the cargo team
- Create and maintain a positive company culture that supports employee participation
- Conduct annual performance reviews
- Embark on employment equity initiatives; engaging with all employees to promote employment equity and encouraging employees to undertake the self-declaration survey updating as necessary
- All levels of the organization share responsibility for human rights within the organization
- Overseeing and promoting continuous improvement on human rights and employment equity initiatives
Qualifications & Skills:
- Post-secondary education in business, transportation, or logistics preferred
- 5 years’ experience in a senior leadership role within transportation, warehousing, logistics required
- Ability to work in a diverse environment with a thorough understanding of different cultures, traditions, practices and beliefs as it affects doing successful business in the North
- Proficient with Computers (MS Office)
- Excellent communication skills, ability to communicate with all levels of employees and customers
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent negotiation skills
- Experience implementing and/or maintaining an inventory tracking system
- Northern experience considered an asset
- Travel may be required
- Ability to obtain and maintain enhanced security clearances
- Inuktitut language considered an asset
- Preference given to Inuit Land Claims Beneficiaries
