The information below is intended to serve as a general guide for the acceptance and carriage of items under the broad classification of hunting and hunting related. This guide outlines our policies in order to simplify traveling with trophies, meat items and game/fish as baggage. In some cases, the items may need to be shipped as cargo. Information is also provided regarding traveling with firearms and ammunition.

Game (Antlers, Hides, Meat)
“GAME” is considered to be any wild animal, bird, or fish hunted for food or sport – which includes the flesh, carcass or any part of the carcass (e.g. antlers, fur, meat, etc).
- Due to space limitations on Calm Air aircrafts, antlers and hides WILL NOT be accepted as checked baggage. For shipping arrangements of these items, please contact your local Calm Air Cargo office.
- Fresh/frozen meat or fish will be accepted as checked baggage, provided all items are properly packaged to prevent any leakage of blood and/or other fluids. All pieces must also have Limited Release Tags signed by the passenger and attached to each item. These pieces are included in the free baggage allowance, and excess charges will apply along with space availability for those items that exceed the weight, size and piece limitations.
- All perishable items must be identified as such to check-in and cargo agents. Perishable labels will be attached to these pieces - however, Calm Air assumes no responsibility for the spoilage of any perishable item.
Firearms can be accepted as checked baggage or cargo; however, carriage in the aircraft cabin is not permitted under any circumstances.
Sporting firearms will be accepted as checked baggage subject to the following terms:
- All firearms must be declared to the check-in/cargo agent.
- All firearms must be unloaded and the passenger acknowledging this responsibility under the criminal code must sign a firearm declaration form.
- 1 rifle case can contain no more than 2 rifles, with or without the scopes.
- Bolt action firearms must have the bolt removed and packed separately.
- Firearms must be unloaded and placed in a locked - specially designed, non see through case. If possible, a locking device on the firearm is requested.
- Firearms will be included in determining the free baggage allowance, and excess charges will apply along with space availability for those items that exceed the weight, size and piece limitations.
- Registered firearms such as handguns require government documentation for transport. Consult the Canadian Firearm Centre and/or Canada Customs for complete details.
Only ammunition in Division 1.45 as defined in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations will be accepted for carriage. This classification covers most ammunition that hunters normally use. Ammunition other than in Division 1.45 or ammunition with explosive or incendiary projectiles will not be accepted as checked baggage or cargo.
- All ammunition must be declared to the check-in/cargo agent.
- Each passenger is permitted 5kgs (11lbs) of ammunition as checked baggage.
- Allowances for one passenger must not be combined with another passenger’s allowance.
- Ammunition must be packaged separately from the firearm, in the manufacturer’s original container or in a container specifically manufactured for the carriage of small arms ammunition.
- Only shells or cartridges are acceptable types of ammunition. Gunpowder and gunpowder pellets are strictly prohibited.
- To avoid shock movement, the carton must be placed inside a suitcase and cushioned with clothing.
*Ammunition weighing more than 5kgs (11lbs) but less than 25kgs (55lbs) will be accepted as CARGO only and must comply with the provisions of the Dangerous Goods Regulations and be documented as such.
The shipment of GAME (per definition above) as checked baggage or cargo between Provinces, between Provinces and Territories, or between Canada and other countries requires an Export permit. The shipper must produce an Export permit issued by the appropriate authority. Failure to produce the permit will result in refusal by the Airline agent to transport the goods. Airline personnel have no authority to waive the permit requirement. Take note that the form of the permit may be the actual hunting license or particular game tag. Nevertheless, consult with the appropriate authorities for specific details and requirements.
Game must be appropriately packaged in a container or case specifically designed for the shipment of such items (e.g. crate, hard-sided case, or plastic wrapped with absorbent material) in order to prevent leakage and damage to either itself or other baggage and cargo in the aircraft. The carrier will refuse to accept property for transportation that is not suitably packaged to withstand ordinary handling.
Dangerous Goods in Baggage
It is illegal and extremely dangerous to pack hazardous materials in/as checked baggage or to carry them on board. These include, but do not represent a complete list of hazardous materials (matches, gases, corrosives, aerosols, flammable liquids, explosives, and poisons). Precautionary measures must also be taken against hidden hazards such as those presented by batteries, camping stoves, cleaners, lanterns, lighters, etc. Consult an Airline representative for additional details and instructions.
Dry Ice in Baggage
Dry Ice is permitted in carry-on and checked baggage in quantities not exceeding 2kgs (4.4 lbs) per passenger when used to pack perishables, provided the package has been declared to the check-in agent, and permits the release of carbon dioxide gas. The package must also bear a carbon dioxide label on at least 2 surfaces.
Acceptance as Excess Baggage
Because excess baggage has a lower shipping priority than the “free” baggage allowance, we cannot ensure excess baggage will travel on the same flight(s) as the passenger. Making arrangements to ship game a day or more in advance of the passenger’s travel, as cargo (if possible), may help to ensure the shipment arrives in Winnipeg in a timely manner.
- Unsuitable or inadequately packaged items will not be accepted for carriage.
- Any item where the width plus length plus height is greater than 115in/292cm or weighs more than 70lbs/32kgs must be sent as cargo.
Acceptance as Cargo
The same packaging requirements that exist under Baggage are also applied to the shipment of cargo. Pieces that cannot be transported as baggage may be shipped as cargo provided the package dimensions do not exceed the limitation of the aircraft door. As the cargo door size varies with the aircraft type, specific dimensions may be obtained from a Calm Air cargo agent.
- When shipments are tendered as cargo, it is recommended that 4 hours advance notice be given to the local Calm Air Cargo Office.
*International/Transborder – Please check with individual Airlines regarding their excess bag/cargo charges and conditions of carriage. All Calm Air flights terminate in Winnipeg and excess baggage/cargo must be claimed before rechecking with your next carrier.
- If the rack of antlers is not being scored, it should be split down the middle and the antlers placed inside one another to reduce space required and thereby expedite shipping.
- It is recommended that your trophy/meat be sent as cargo a day or so prior to your departure back to Winnipeg. Arrangements can be made ahead of time to transport and store these items in our walk-in cooler/freezer, so that they are available to you upon arrival into Winnipeg.
- Your guide can generally arrange to appropriately package and ship all game on a prepaid basis. To avoid unnecessary delay in shipping, we suggest that advance arrangements are made with the guide, prior to your arrival at the Winnipeg airport for your connecting departure flight.
